Jinja Police are searching for the driver of an ambulance registration number UBR 148W who drove recklessly from Iganga to Jinja carrying a dead body and ten relatives of the deceased.
According to the Traffic Police publicist, Michael Kananura, the unidentified driver was signaled to stop at a checkpoint but declined to comply, and drove on.
“He was intercepted again at Wanyange and on stopping, jumped out of the ambulance and fled, leaving the body and the ten vehicle occupants with the police personnel,” he said in a statement.

The occupants who were short of words to explain the matter, resorted to the only option of hiring another vehicle to proceed with their journey with their body.
The ambulance was impounded and taken to Jinja Central Police Station while a search for the errant driver began.
Kananura said that the incident serves as a reminder that ambulances are meant for emergency medical transportation and should not be used to claim right of way or transport dead bodies. “We urge all drivers to exercise caution and respect the intended purpose of ambulances”, he said.
