The vehicle was found dangerously loaded with 31 passengers, 13 perched on top, 18 seated in passengers’ seats, and with its number plates deliberately obscured.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Vincent Bagiire has condemned acts of recklessness on Ugandan roads which, in addition to endangering people’s lives, has been the cause of fatal accidents for long.

“As the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, we remain committed to the strict enforcement of traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users, and we call upon the public to adhere to traffic rules and refrain from acts that compromise road safety or interfere with lawful police orders”, Bagiire said.

He was reacting to an incident where police at Nsangi arrested six people including a driver and five passengers who were dangerously travelling aboard a minibus registration number UBH 183S destined to Mpigi for a football match in Buwama.

The passengers have been charged with riding in a dangerous position, while the driver is facing multiple charges, including concealing a number plate, driving out of class and breach of operator’s license

The group was intercepted through footage of CCTV cameras installed as part of police ongoing efforts to monitor & curb such dangerous behavior on roads.

Their colleagues attempted to forcibly secure their release by storming the police station but police acted swiftly, arrested three others for obstruction and inciting violence, and have been arraigned in court. On their arrest, the other members of the mob fled.
