The debate is based on the motion: “Social Media Has Done More Harm Than Good to the Learners’ Academic Excellence.”
Six primary schools out of the 33 that qualified for the Mukono District debate competitions have advanced to the quarterfinals. The competitions, which conclude today, are being hosted at Mpoma Girls School in Nama sub-county.
The schools that progressed include Mt. St. Thereza Namagunga Boarding Primary School, St. Agnes Catholic Boarding Primary School Naggalama, Elasto and Dollah Primary School, Namuyenje Church of Uganda Primary School, St. Edwards Granny Primary School, and Nakifuma Church of Uganda Primary School.

According to Gashegu Murama, the chairperson of the Mukono District Primary Schools Debating Committee, this is the first time the debate competition is being held. The debate is based on the motion: “Social Media Has Done More Harm Than Good to the Learners’ Academic Excellence.”
The theme for the competition is: “Empowering Young Minds to Speak, Lead and Think.” Murama noted that the event has attracted both private and government schools from across the district.
“We intend to nurture critical thinking among learners, and that will be achieved through these debates. These competitions, which will be held annually, will also help to develop learners’ potential, boost their confidence, and ultimately improve their academic performance,” he said.
At the quarter finals, St. Thereza is to face St. Edwards Granny School, Elasto and Dollah to compete with Nakifuma CU whereas St. Agnes is to faceoff with Namuyenje CU.
