The fate of Andrew Gonzaga Ssewungu’s victory in Kalungu West constituency hangs in the balance after a court ordered a recount of votes.
Ssewungu, a National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, had been declared winner with a narrow margin of 46 votes over independent candidate Ismail Ssemakula.
The decision came after Ssemakula filed a petition challenging the results, alleging irregularities in the electoral process.

Masaka Chief Magistrate, Herbert Asiimwe granted the petition, ordering a recount of votes to be conducted on January 23, before a Grade 1 Magistrate in Kalungu district.
Ssewungu, a vocal opposition MP, had won the seat with 10,106 votes, while Ssemakula garnered 10,069 votes. The outcome of the recount is expected to determine the ultimate winner of the hotly contested election.
