Security operatives have arrested five people including a UPDF soldier and a deserter over last month’s gruesome murder of Godfrey Wayengera, a Finance Director of Compassion International, as he drove back home late in the night.
Wayengera was killed at Nsuube Cell in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality.
The suspects were picked from different parts of the country in a joint security operation on Saturday night. The investigations have stretched for over a month.
The month-long investigation finally zeroed on the five from various places, they include 40-year-old Ashraf Tumusiime (alias Obadiah), 40-year-old Mike Ssenteza, 30-year-old Fahad Kasolo, 50-year-old Muhammad Mwesige (alias Jet Lee), who is an army deserter and Cpl. The arrest of the five suspects was conducted by a security team of officers drawn from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and Defence Intelligence and Security, formerly the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence.
Security sources said the gang, headed by Tumusiime, had been operating in the Greater Mukono area and were previously involved in criminal activities, including highway robberies. Tumusiime was arrested at Kusatu on Kayunga Road in Nama sub-county, Mukono district.
Ssenteza was picked from a hideout in Busawuli ward, Wakiso district, while Kasolo was arrested from Kireka, Wakiso district. Mwesige and Mugabe were arrested in Kagugube, Wandegeya in Kampala. On June 9, at around 8:00pm, Miriam Wayengera called her husband (Godfrey) to find out what time he would be returning home.
He had travelled to Mbale for the burial of his cousin and was supposed to return to his home in Nsuube A Cell in Mukono municipality.

Wayengera reportedly informed his wife that he was around Nkokonjeru in Buikwe district and would be home in an hour’s time.
The distance from Nkokonjeru to Mukono district is approximately 22.8km. Two hours later, when she did not hear from him and yet his phones were off, she developed panic. The following morning, his body was found by the roadside near a railway line in Namumira Cell.
Christine Najjabi, a teacher of Beloved Daycare and Nursery School who had travelled with Wayengera from Mbale, narrated their ordeal, saying they were stopped by four men in military attire, with one of them holding a gun. “They stopped us, asked Wayengera for the gun. They entered the car and said they were taking him to police for holding a gun illegally.
Sources privy to the investigations said the murder was planned and several people were involved.
During his recent State of the Nation Address, President Yoweri Museveni decried the senseless murder of Wayengera, saying part of the problem was not having security cameras.
Museveni cited Wayengera’s killing as evidence of why the country urgently needs to complete the digital number plate and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera infrastructure.
He lashed out at government officials who were using CCTV cameras to fine motorists, saying, “the cameras were for fighting crime and not making money.”
Speaking about the most recent murder of a couple in Entebbe, the President tasked security officials to co-ordinate and deal with criminals who kill innocent Ugandans.
David Mutaaga and his wife, Deborah Naziwa had just returned to Uganda after 30 years on kyeyo in Zurich, Switzerland, when they were attacked and stabbed to death.
The President said if there was proper coordination between people and the security agencies, the assailant would have been arrested on the fateful night.
