While still in power, Joseph Kabila strongly opposed a proposal by the Congolese parliament, of exempting former heads of state from trial in courts of law, arguing that their exemption may prompt them to behave in unruly ways while in office, hiding behind the trial exemption.
The death penalty had also been waived, but was reinstated before commencement of Kabila’s trial.

On Tuesday, the military court in Kinshasa condemned Kabila to hang after being convicted of charges including, according to Al Jazeera, financing the M23 rebel group bent on unseating Felix Tshisekedi’s government, treason, genocide, rape, human torture and many other charges.

The two governments are signatories to two agreements geared at ending the war, with the first one concluded in June in Washington DC, US, and the second one signed in Qatar in July this year.
