At least 14 people were killed and four others injured in a devastating road crash at Lwera Swamp in Kalungu District along the Kampala–Masaka Highway on the night of Monday, August 3, police have confirmed.
The fatal accident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. at Kamunga Trading Centre and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sino truck, registration number UBS 040F, which was transporting sand.
According to the Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, all 14 victims who died on the spot were occupants of the taxi.

Police officers responded to the scene, documented the crash, and launched investigations into the circumstances that led to the collision.
Kasirye added that the driver of the truck fled the scene after the crash and efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing.
The four survivors, including two occupants from the taxi and two from the truck, were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

The latest tragedy adds to the growing number of fatal crashes on the Kampala–Masaka Highway, a major transport corridor that has witnessed numerous deadly accidents over the years. Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, observe traffic regulations, and avoid reckless driving, especially during nighttime travel, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
