18-Year-Old Student Shot Dead, Police Officer Arrested

The Police in Kaliro district have arrested one of its own, Sergeant Charles Kyakwise for shooting dead a student.

Police have identified the deceased as Mugodo Sogo, a student at Kaliro Vocational Secondary School. The incident is said to have happened at Kyani village in Bumanya sub-county, Kaliro district.

Preliminary reports indicate that on March 8, 2025, a resident of Kananzoki village, Godfrey Mutebi, reported a case of cattle theft involving three stolen bulls.

It is alleged that a team of police officers responded to the scene and deployed a police sniffer dog, which led the detectives to Zigondo Bosco Pande, a known habitual offender.

However, as police attempted to arrest Zigondo, an angry crowd gathered and turned violent, pelting stones at the officers in an apparent bid to execute mob justice.

The officers took cover indoors with the suspect, trying to calm the situation, but as tensions escalated, Sergeant Kyakwise discharged a bullet, fatally striking Mudogo Sogo.

The victim succumbed to the injuries while being rushed to the hospital. His body was later taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Following the shooting, police arrested Sergeant Charles Kyakwise as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The suspect in the cattle theft case, Zigondo Bosco Pande, was successfully rescued and detained at Kaliro Central Police Station (CPS) for further questioning.

ASP Michael Kasadha, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Busoga North, confirmed the ongoing investigations, assuring the public of transparency and accountability in handling the matter.

Authorities have urged the community to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasising the importance of allowing legal processes to take their course.
