A Moroccan court has sentenced 19 football supporters — 18 Senegalese and one French — to prison terms of up to one year following violent scenes that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.

The unrest broke out during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, hosted in Morocco, after a late penalty was awarded to the home side. Tensions flared as supporters stormed the pitch, hurled plastic chairs, and clashed with stadium stewards in protest of the decision.

Despite the chaos, Senegal national football team held on to secure a 1–0 victory. The match was temporarily halted as security personnel worked to restore order.

Authorities reported that the violence caused extensive damage to stadium facilities, with losses estimated at more than $476,000.

In its ruling, the court handed 11 fans one-year prison sentences, four were sentenced to six months, and the remaining four received three-month terms. The convictions were based on charges including violence, destruction of property, and disorderly conduct.

Defense lawyers described the penalties as excessive and confirmed plans to appeal the sentences, arguing that emotions had run high in a high-stakes final but did not warrant such severe punishment.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over stadium security and fan conduct at major continental tournaments, casting a shadow over what had otherwise been a fiercely contested final between two of Africa’s football powerhouses.
