Over six months ago in December 2024, five gun wielding killers took the life of a 38-year old prominent businessman of Buwama town in Mpigi district, along Kampala-Masaka highway, a celebrated philanthropist who, according to locals, groomed and financed many upcoming traders in the area, rescued many stranded with personal and family hardships, and left a vacuum that many things will be hard to cover.

Since his tragic demise, friends and relatives live in a nightmarish life, fearful that because no arrests are known to have been made by police, the killers’ motives remain unrevealed and, according to the deceased’s brother Lauben Birame a.k.a Musumba, “we are fearful that if they did not get what they targeted, they may strike again”.

Isaac Mugabe, who until his death was the proprietor of IM Hardware in Buwama, killers shot him at point blank rage as he arrived at his home after retiring from work; he was travelling in his car TOYOTA Harrier ‘Kawundo’ registration number UBG 420P together with his wife Florence Nakato and his sister Dianah Tushabe.

After killing him, they grabbed a bag of money from the two women in the vehicle and vanished in thin air. To date, residents of Buwama are not at liberty to discuss his death for fear of a possible recurrence of the scene.

Mugabe’s friend who for known reasons did not disclose his name, said his assailants arrived in town early in the day, and are said to have gone to the deceased’s shop.

The unnamed residents said that at around 6:00pm, their car was cited near Mugabe’s home but that they feared to report the matter to police lest they be subjected to a number of questions like the type of vehicle they were travelling in, its registration number, the type of guns they had, and other questions.

Residents further said that the vehicle kept making rounds in town till late in the evening when they pitched camp by Mugabe’s home, standing in isolated spaces Mugabe’s brother who resides in neighbouring Bunjakko village, said.

On receiving news of his brother’s death, he rushed to the scene where he was informed that the killers ambushed them as they entered the gate.

“I was informed that the killers were in a group of five men with four holding rifles and hiding their faces behind hoods. They shot at Mugabe before he could get out of the car, and he died instantly; they then grabbed the money bag from Tushabe and left, ordering their victims not to raise any alarm,” Musumba said.

He expressed dissatisfaction with police for failing to give them a follow up of what has so far unearthed by the investigations, adding however that the deceased had running land cases in court and it is suspected that the parties in these cases could have orchestrated his murder.

And other speculators suggest that his death could be attached to his unrivalled success in the hardware business which is said to be very competitive in the area.

Sources further revealed that the widow Florence Nakato has since her husband’s death been jailed twice, spending one week in custody immediately after burial of Mugabe, and two weeks when she was arrested the second time.

It is suspected that she was arrested based on the fact that on the day of her husband’s death, unidentified men visited the shop and talked to her and the deceased.

Asked who these people were however, Nakato said she could no longer remember them, arguing that her husband used to receive a lot of visitors.

Police spokesperson for Katonga Karim Magid explained that investigations involving homicide do not take a short time, adding that the CMI had arrested some people including the widow, but that they were released on finding them innocent.

He appealed to volunteers to bring more relevant information to police to help in further investigations.
