Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced the sudden breakdown of its light vending system. As a result, the customers countrywide are unable to purchase light tokens across all platforms.
The information has been delivered to UEDCL customers through the announcement made on the afternoon of Saturday, 20th September, 2025 in a brief statement on X Platform.
The body tasked with managing distribution of electricity after the exit of UMEME however, says their IT Team is working around the clock to have the system up and running by 6:00PM today.
“We are currently experiencing downtime with our Light Vending System. As a result, customers are unable to purchase Light tokens across all platforms,” reads the statement signed by Jonan Kizza, Head of Corporate and Stakeholders Affairs.
Though UEDCL had given 6:00PM as the time they expected the situation to get back to normal, by 9:00pm on Saturday, the clients from Mukono district were not able to buy tokens.

“I thought it was a general blackout but when I saw my neighbours switching on their security lights, I realised it was a challenge only for me. It was after 7:00PM when I got a statement from UEDCL explaining the challenge. Unfortunately, it had already past 6:00PM, the time given for the system to get back to normal but when we tried again and again, it is still unsusccessful,” said Mr. Musana.
