A professional bar member, Sseggona said the voters set a precedent by sending him, a person with a second degree, to represent them, and wondered why the party wants to rescind this standard by opting to give the card to unqualified people.

Busiro East Member of Parliament, Medard Lubega Sseggona who seems not to have come to terms yet with the loss of the National Unity Platform (NUP) card to Kyengera mayor, Mathias Walukagga, has said that the NRM system of cheating in the open is a better evil than the NUP’s system where you are cheated without seeing.

Sseggona cited how Zahara Luyirika who was contesting for the Kampala Woman MP seat ended up in Makindye West, how NUP secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya and Fred Nyanzi were dropped for the Lord mayorship and the ticket given to Balimwezo, and how Waiswa Mufumbiro who initially wanted to stand in Kawempe South ended up in Nakawa East.

“Nubian Li who has never even contested for a village youth councillor was given the ticket for Nakawa Mayorship in preference to Godfrey Luyombya,” an angry Sseggona wondered.

Speaking recently on a Kampala FM station, Sseggona openly attacked Walukagga as an incompetent choice and declared that he is going to support Democratic Front candidates, and that he is going to stand to retain his parliamentary post on an independent ticket.

Sseggona further said that he is going to support his president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu for the presidential seat but support DF’s Flavia Nakafeero for the Wakiso district chairmanship position although NUP’s candidate is Nasif Najja.

Unleashing his attack on Walukagga further, Sseggona who spoke in an overt tone of disgruntlement, wondered how Walukagga could have been given the ticket when he openly told him that he had found a lot of problems answering the committee’s questions in English.

“How do you deny a person with unquestionable academic qualifications and opt for a person like Walukagga”, he wondered, adding that his constituents have asked him to stand for the seat, come 2026 elections, on an independent ticket.

As he continued to attack Walukagga, Sseggona said at one point that he respects him because he is his senior by age, noting that Walukagga joined the music world with the late Livingstone Kasozi while he (Sseggona) was in primary school.

He said he now feels a free man especially given that Busiro voters have given him a go ahead to represent them again, and added that since deep holes have been dug in the party road, he will travel the road of the voters which is clear.

In response, NUP deputy Secretary General, Aisha Kabanda blamed Sseggona for going public over personal disgruntlement and moreover about a system she maintains was open and well spelt out. Kabanda maintained that the candidates were verified following an investigation from the voters.

Nakaseke South MP Paulson Lutamaguzi Ssemakula also blamed Sseggona for going personal over a matter he referred to as minor and personal.

“It is unfortunate that one could take the party card as a criterion for showing the spirit of willingness or unwillingness to support the struggle; this is the time to gauge a true revolutionary”, Luttamaguzi said.

In a divergent view however, a Makerere University political scientist, Siraje Nsanja said Sseggona’s decision to come independent will serve as a wakeup call to political parties especially now at a time when the censuring system across the board is marred with anomalies.

Nsanja argued that in future, these parties will think twice before applying the underhand methods they used this time to gauge who deserves the party flag.
