Mukono Parliamentary Candidate Mubarak Ssekikubo Remanded Over Fraud

Ssekikubo was arrested on day one of the parliamentarians’ nominations, and he was picked by operatives of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU) and police CID shortly after finalizing his nomination procedures at Mukono EC offices and taken to an unknown destination.

Mukono Grade I Magistrate Gerard Emwogu has remanded Nakisunga sub-county chairperson and Mukono South parliamentary aspirant Mubarak Mubiru Ssekikubo for allegedly extorting sh38m from job seekers, to allegedly influence members of the District Service Commission to offer them jobs.

He is jointly charged with Lugazi Municipality Community Development Officer (CDO) Ronald Ssaku Mugerwa who was earlier charged and remanded on similar charges. Another suspect, Saadi Wataba, is currently on the run. They are charged with obtaining money by false pretense, and conspiracy to defraud.

Ssekikubo who is standing as an independent candidate, is said to have been evading arrest for quite long until the security operatives laid an ambush for him as he went to conclude his nomination.

His lawyer Lawrence Tumuhairwe of Larry and Company Advocates applied for bail claiming that the accused is a person held in high esteem given his political status, and that he is in a poor health condition.

However, State Attorney Josephine Nanyonga watered down the application on the grounds that investigations are still ongoing.

She was backed by the Magistrate who said court is constrained by time, and added that the accused’s bail application will be entertained on 4th November 2025 when he appears again in court. He was remanded till then.
