“We did everything possible to stabilize them before referral, but the burns were too extensive. Both victims were in critical condition and passed away before reaching Mulago,” Dr. Mubiru said.

Fear has gripped the residents of Mpumu village in Ntenjeru-Kisoga Town Council in Mukono district following the burning to death of a couple on Tuesday night inside their house.
Ssalongo Michael Kajubi, the Mpumu village chairperson identified the deceased as Christine Nambiro (28) who has been eight months pregnant and her husband, Joseph Jolly Kabazi
Kajubi said that unknown assailants reportedly found the couple asleep in their home and set it ablaze late in the night.
It is alleged that the attackers broke the window and poured petrol into the house before setting it on fire.
Zainabu Namboozo, one of the rescuers who were among the first to respond to the alarm, said the fire was so devastating and intense.
Namboozo added that she heard the couple making an alarm for help, and when she reached the scene, residents were already trying to break the door to rescue them.
“We rushed them to Herona Community Hospital using a bodaboda, but they were all burnt beyond recognition,” she said.

Residents who responded to the fire said it was too fierce to save the victims despite their efforts.
“We tried to put out the fire after breaking the door, but it was too late. The flames were too strong,” said Namuddu Resty, a neighbor.
Another resident, Brenda Namubiru, said the tragedy shocked them because the couple’s kitchen was separate from the main house, ruling out an accidental fire.
“We don’t understand how the fire started. Their kitchen is detached from the house, so it couldn’t have been from cooking. We tried to rescue them, but it was impossible,” Namubiru explained.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though some residents suspect it could be linked to a land dispute that has long caused tension in the community.
“We condemn this act in the strongest terms. If it’s over land, then people have taken things too far. We want police to take serious action,” the village chairperson, Kajubi said.
At Herona Community Hospital, Dr. Frank Mubiru, the medical officer in charge, said the couple sustained severe burns and were referred to Mulago Hospital for specialized care.

“We did everything possible to stabilize them before referral, but the burns were too extensive. Both victims were in critical condition and passed away before reaching Mulago,” Dr. Mubiru said.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to track down the assailants.
“We have opened a case of murder by arson. Preliminary information indicates that the attackers used petrol to burn the victims inside their home. Our team is following several leads to establish the motive and apprehend the culprits,” Onyango stated.
