Three police officers attached to the Busia border police have been arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of abuse of office, aiding a prisoner to escape, and conspiracy to defeat justice.

The officers, AIP Kali Godfrey, CPL Owiny Peter, and CPL Odul Oscar, allegedly aided the escape of Kasule Najib, a key suspect in a gold scam involving an American national who was defrauded over USD 840,000.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), working with the Police Crime Investigations Department and the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, brought the charges against the officers, who were remanded until January 21, 2025.

The incident occurred between December 22 and 23, 2025, when the officers allegedly abused their authority and helped Najib escape from custody at the Uganda-Kenya border.

The SH-ACU is investigating the gold scam, and Najib’s escape has raised concerns about corruption within the security forces.

The charges against the officers highlight the government’s efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability among public officials. The case is expected to be closely watched as it proceeds to trial.
