Iran has begun a series of powerful retaliatory military operations across the Middle East following the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint United States-Israeli offensive, marking one of the most dramatic escalations in recent regional history.

Iranian state media announced that Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989, was killed in a coordinated wave of airstrikes carried out by U.S. and Israeli forces targeting key leadership compounds and military infrastructure in Iran. A national mourning period of 40 days has been declared, and the country has also observed several days of public holiday in his honor.

In response to the death of their highest political authority, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other armed forces have launched “extensive missile and drone” attacks against U.S. military bases and Israeli targets throughout the region. Iranian leadership has vowed to exact what it describes as “severe punishment” on those it holds responsible for Khamenei’s killing.

The conflict has rapidly expanded, with explosions and security alerts reported in multiple countries across the Middle East. Civilians have also been caught up in the violence, including casualties reported in strikes on educational facilities.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the escalating military actions, calling on all parties to respect international law and urging an immediate cessation of hostilities.

In a statement, Guterres reaffirmed that the United Nations Charter prohibits the threat or use of force that undermines international peace and security and stressed that diplomatic negotiations remain the only viable path to resolving disputes.

World leaders have reacted with concern over the potential for the conflict to spread further, emphasizing the grave consequences for civilians and regional stability if hostilities continue.
