Police in Adjumani District have arrested a prison warder after a colleague died following a controversial herbal treatment administered by a witch doctor at Openzinzi Prison.
L/CPL Kibedi Yese is being held to assist investigations into the death of 30-year-old Wegumba Mathaeus, a fellow warder at the facility.
According to North West Nile Regional Police spokesperson SP Collins Asea, the incident is linked to a stolen motorcycle belonging to warder Ogwok Daniel, reported earlier in March 2026.
In a bid to identify the alleged thief, Ogwok allegedly brought a witch doctor named Emmanuel to the prison on March 12 at around 1:00 PM. The witch doctor administered herbal medicine to warders as part of a ritual intended to reveal the culprit.

Two of the warders recovered, but Mathaeus died from complications. His body was taken to Adjumani General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Ogwok Daniel and the witch doctor are currently at large, prompting a police manhunt. A death inquiry file, Adj CRB 12/2026, has been opened, with homicide and forensic teams investigating the case.
SP Asea warned the public against relying on witch doctor rituals to resolve criminal matters, urging people to report incidents directly to law enforcement.
