Police Investigate Supervisor Accused of Stealing Cash, Setting Petrol Station Ablaze

Speaking during a weekly press briefing at the police headquarters in Naguru, Owoyesigyire revealed that CCTV footage reviewed by investigators pointed to Mutaka as the person behind the incident.

Police in Mukono are searching for a petrol station supervisor accused of stealing money and setting a fuel station on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence.

The suspect, identified as Lawrence Mutaka, is alleged to have targeted Total Petrol Station located in Sonde, Misindye, within Goma Division in Mukono Municipality.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Mutaka—aged 40—reportedly stole an unspecified amount of money from the station before setting it ablaze in the early hours of Monday, April 6, 2026, at around 4:00 a.m.

Police say that in the process of igniting the fire, the suspect sustained injuries and fled the scene to an unknown location.

Officers from Goma Police Station responded swiftly and managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread to nearby fuel storage tanks, preventing what could have been a major disaster affecting surrounding properties.

Speaking during a weekly press briefing at the police headquarters in Naguru, Owoyesigyire revealed that CCTV footage reviewed by investigators pointed to Mutaka as the person behind the incident.

“He allegedly stole money from the station and later set it on fire to conceal evidence,” Owoyesigyire said, urging the suspect to surrender to authorities at Mukono Police Division headquarters.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
