In a dramatic turn of events, police at Old Kampala have successfully recovered a firearm at the Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, located in Kampala Central Division. The discovery occurred early on the morning of April 14, 2026, when a bus conductor’s routine security check uncovered an AK-47 rifle hidden in a passenger’s luggage.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the conductor was loading passengers onto a bus bound for Mbarara when a suspicious passenger approached, asking to transport a piece of luggage. During a standard inspection, the conductor requested the passenger open the bag, but the man refused.

The refusal immediately raised concerns, prompting the conductor to conduct a physical search of the luggage. Inside, he found what appeared to be a firearm wrapped in a white polythene bag, which was then packed into another bag. Upon closer inspection, it was confirmed to be an AK-47 rifle, although it was unloaded and lacking ammunition.

The conductor promptly alerted the authorities, and a police task force rushed to the scene. Upon their arrival, they seized the firearm and began an investigation into the incident. However, the suspect managed to flee before he could be apprehended.

As of now, the suspect remains at large, and police are working diligently to identify and track him down. Authorities have warned the public to remain vigilant, as investigations into the intended use and origin of the weapon continue.

This discovery has raised concerns over the potential illegal transport of firearms through public transport networks, underscoring the importance of routine security checks at bus terminals. The police have assured that they will intensify security measures in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
