Businessman Remanded Over Alleged sh2.2bn Fertilizer Scam

A businessman accused of orchestrating a multi-billion-shilling fertilizer fraud has been arraigned before the Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court and remanded until May 28, 2026.

The suspect, identified as Muwonge Ibrahim, was jointly arraigned by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on charges of Obtaining Goods by False Pretence, Electronic Fraud, Forgery, Uttering False Documents, and Conspiracy to Commit a Felony.

According to investigators, Muwonge, also known as Ibra, allegedly worked with accomplices who are still at large to defraud a Turkish fertilizer company of goods worth more than sh2.2bn.

Prosecution alleges that between February and December 2023, the accused and his associates, operating through a company identified as Kureha (U) Ltd, convinced Iskenderun Fertilizer Inc. to ship 28 containers of fertilizer to Uganda.

Each container reportedly carried 540 bags of fertilizer, bringing the total consignment value to over sh2.2bn.

Investigators further allege that after receiving the shipment, Muwonge and his accomplices cut off communication with the Turkish company and allegedly placed the fertilizer on the Ugandan market for sale without making payment.

The court heard that investigations into the matter are still ongoing as authorities continue pursuing other suspects believed to have participated in the alleged fraud scheme.

Muwonge was remanded to prison until May 28, 2026, when he is expected to return to court for further proceedings.
