Members of Lukwago’s legal team were expected to respond to the charge and make submissions in support of his application for bail.

Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye.

Lukwago, who was arrested from his home by UPDF officers from his home at Wakaliga on Monday, was on Wednesday afternoon brought before court under tight security as prosecutors formally read out the charge against him.

The veteran lawyer and opposition politician is currently serving as lead defence counsel for opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye in an ongoing treason case.

Details surrounding the allegations against Lukwago were still emerging by press time, as court proceedings continued at the Makindye-based court.

Members of Lukwago’s legal team were expected to respond to the charge and make submissions in support of his application for bail.

The development marks a significant turn in Uganda’s political and legal landscape, given Lukwago’s prominent role in opposition politics and his involvement in the defence of Besigye, whose treason case has attracted considerable public attention.

By press time, the court had not yet ruled on the bail application, and proceedings were still underway.
