72-Year-Old Man Arraigned for Allegedly Defiling 15-Year-Old Granddaughter in Mukono

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Matovu is accused of repeatedly defiling the minor between 2025 and June 2026 while she was under his guardianship.

A 72-year-old man has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mukono on charges of aggravated defilement after he allegedly sexually abused his 15-year-old granddaughter over an extended period.

The suspect, identified as Fred Matovu, a resident of Kasala Village in Kasawo Sub-county, Mukono District, was arrested by Police in Naggalama Police Division following investigations into the alleged abuse.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Matovu is accused of repeatedly defiling the minor between 2025 and June 2026 while she was under his guardianship.

Police said the alleged abuse came to light on June 30, 2026, when the victim confided in her teacher during a school meeting. She reportedly disclosed that her grandfather had been sexually abusing her at home and threatening her to remain silent.

The victim has since received medical treatment and is currently undergoing psychosocial support, police said.

Following investigations, Matovu was charged with aggravated defilement contrary to Sections 116(3) and 116(4)(c) of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128. He appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mukono on Friday.

Police commended the school for providing a safe environment that enabled the victim to report the alleged abuse.

“We commend the school for creating a safe space for the child to speak out. The Uganda Police Force urges members of the public to report all cases of child abuse,” Owoyesigyire said.
