Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died at the age of 78.
The death was announced on Monday by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Ameir passed away at about 8:00am at Zanzibar People’s Defense Forces Memorial Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.
Ameir married President Samia in 1978, and the couple went on to raise four children.
Following the announcement of his death, condolences have been extended to President Samia and her family as the country mourns the loss.
Burial arrangements are underway, with Ameir expected to be laid to rest in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Further details on the burial programme and other funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family later.
