Ogwang urged the lecturers to continue supporting the institution by covering the staffing gap as the Ministry of Education and Sports seeks additional funding.

Kyambogo University pays its part-time lecturers a flat transport refund of sh10,000 per day, the Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports), Peter Ogwang, has told Parliament.
Ogwang acknowledged that the allowance may be insufficient to meet lecturers’ transport costs amid prevailing travel expenses, adding that the university management would review the amount.
However, he said any increase would depend on approval and the availability of funds.
The minister also revealed that the university relies on more than 500 part-time lecturers to sustain teaching due to inadequate funding in the wage budget to recruit additional full-time academic staff.
The revelation follows concerns raised by petitioners, who estimate that part-time lecturers account for about 65% of Kyambogo University’s teaching staff.

The reliance on part-time lecturers has highlighted concerns about their welfare, particularly the adequacy of their transport facilitation and the sustainability of the university’s staffing arrangements.
Ogwang urged the lecturers to continue supporting the institution by covering the staffing gap as the Ministry of Education and Sports seeks additional funding.
He said the university’s management recognised that the current transport refund might not adequately cover lecturers’ daily travel expenses, but noted that adjustments would require the necessary approvals and financial resources.
The development comes amid calls for improved facilitation and better working conditions for part-time lecturers, whose contribution remains critical to the delivery of teaching at the university.
A review of the transport allowance would offer a potential reprieve to the lecturers, although its implementation will depend on the availability of funds and the approval process.
