“I am saddened to learn of the death of our colleague Hon. Amos Mandela Mugerwa who represented Buyamba County in the 9th and 10th Parliament. He passed on today at Mulago National Referral Hospital,” the Tayebwa said.

Former Buyamba County MP Amos Mandela Mugerwa has died at Mulago National Referral Hospital, becoming the second former legislator to die at the facility in less than a week.

Mandela, who represented Buyamba County in the ninth and 10th Parliaments, died on Sunday, according to a condolence message by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa.

His death comes days after former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu (41) died at the same hospital last week on Thursday evening. Matovu was laid to rest on Sunday, October 25, adding to the grief among former legislators and their constituents.

In his condolence message, the Deputy Speaker said Mandela had been a strong voice on Parliament’s Committee on National Economy, where he advocated for accountability in the management of government loans.

“I am saddened to learn of the death of our colleague Hon. Amos Mandela Mugerwa who represented Buyamba County in the 9th and 10th Parliament. He passed on today at Mulago National Referral Hospital,” the Tayebwa said.

The Deputy Speaker recalled working alongside Mandela on the committee, where he consistently pushed the government to ensure effective absorption of borrowed funds before taking on additional loans.

He said Mandela’s persistent advocacy contributed to the establishment of strict guidelines that had to be followed before loans could be approved.

“We were together on the committee on national economy where he always asserted for effective absorption of government loans before more could be borrowed,” he said.

“Through his persistent efforts, the committee was able to set tough guidelines to be followed before any loan could be approved.”

The Deputy Speaker extended condolences to Mandela’s family, the people of Rakai District and the country at large.

“My condolences go to his family, the people of Rakai, and the country at large,” he said.

Mandela’s death comes as the country mourns former Busiro MP Matovu, whose burial took place on the same day the news of Mandela’s death emerged.
