The family of the fallen Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi has fronted and named her sister as a political replacement even before her burial.

Ruth Nyiraneza, the sister to Mateke, the State Minister for defence who died on Sunday from Mulago hospital due to heart failure was on Wednesday unveiled before the locals saying she will ably take on the deceased’s political roles.

This was during the special Kisoro district council sitting which was intended to bid farewell and appreciate Mateke’s tremendous contributions to the district and the nation at large.

Nyiraneza was introduced by Bufumbira North Member of Parliament, John Kamara Nizeyimana. Her introduction followed a request by the district council to the deceased Minister’s family to identify her political successor from her own family members whom they should give their support in the expected by-election.

In an emotional resolution, Kisoro district council appealed to the Mateke family to identify a suitable successor who will ably take on her roles and unfinished businesses.

The council was held at Bungahe village, Nyakabingo sub-county in Kisoro district. Sarah Mateke is a daughter to the former Minister and veteran politician, Dr. Philemon Mateke.

The deceased’s body arrived at Kisoro airfield with a congregation of family members and local leaders covered with grief and sadness. Mateke’s body arrived at around 10:10am in a helicopter AF-623 amidst tight security manned by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and Uganda Police.

Mourners led by Eddy Kwizera Wangahungu, the MP Bukimbiri constituency noted that there is need for Kisoro to have one consensus candidate to replace minister Mateke.

Kwizera added that for peace to take shape in Kisoro, there is no need to waste resources in a bye-election but rather the Mateke family can endorse any family member to take on her political legacy.

Steven Kasyaba, the chairperson Rubanda district who was one of Kigezi sub-region leaders that attended the council session said that while Kisoro people prepare to go for the by-election campaigns, it would be unfortunate to fight for the position of the late minister as the area member of parliament.

Kasyaba added that the Mateke family has played a big role with the Kigezi sub-region hence backing the idea of fronting one candidate agreed upon in unity by the deceased’s family.

In his speech the Kisoro district chairperson noted that there is a need for the government to construct a stadium in Kisoro like how they are doing in other districts and have it named after Sarah Mateke as a sign of appreciating her legacy.

Minister Mateke is going to be buried today (Thursday) in Bungahe village, Nyakabingo parish in Chahi sub-county, Kisoro district.
