Prior to his arrest, Besigye landed in Nairobi, Kenya on 16th November 2024 accompanied by his longtime friend, Haji Obeid Lutale. Besigye disappeared between his hotel at Hurlingham, an affluent Nairobi suburb and Riverside drive, 5 kilometres away, where he had jumped on a taxi for a meeting.
September 29, 2025 has been set as the hearing date for a case where renowned Ugandan opposition politician Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and Haji Obeid Lutale sued the Kenyan government for accepting their repatriation without following procedures known in the law.
The duo argues that although they had travelled to Kenya under open and law-abiding procedures, they were abducted from Kenya where they had gone to visit an ally Martha Karua who was launching a book.
They were taken straight to a military court where they were charged with treasonable offences, and subsequently remanded in prison where they have been languishing since their detention.
He appeared four days later in Uganda.
According to his allies, he was lured into meeting his abductors who were disguised as Kenya security agents, and although Kenya authorities insist they had no role in Besigye’s arrest, Uganda says Kenya was fully aware of the plan, and cites intelligence correspondence aimed at tracking him.
Besigye and Haji Lutale were charged with treachery which could fetch a death penalty on conviction.
