Bizzeemu! UPDF Officer Shoots One During Illegal Fishing Operation
Fear gripped the fishing community at Kiyindi landing site in Buikwe district following the shooting of one of their own by a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer attached to Fish Protection Unit.
The Police Spokesperson for Ssezibwa Region, Hellen Butoto, identified the suspect as Second Lieutenant David Wabucha and the victim as Micheal Takule.
“It’s alleged that on August 8, 2023 at around 10:30am , the In charge CID Kiyindi D/Cpl Muhanika Phenhas received a phone call from Wabuche reporting to him as he had shot and injured a one Takule Michael on his left foot during an operation to curb suspected Illegal Dealers of Immature Fish.
The suspect, Wabuche, (32) a UPDF officer attached to Fish Protection Unit and commander of Kiyindi Detarch, residing from Nakawuma cell in Kiyindi Ward, Kiyindi Town council in Buikwe district managed to escape and he is now on the run.
However, the victim identified as Takule (40) was first rushed to Makonge Health Cemtre III. He was later referred to Kawolo Hospital for further management.
Butoto said that police is currently searching for Wabuche to be charged with attempted murder. Investigations into the matter are also ongoing.
