The elders of Buganda on Sunday endorsed the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu who has today headed to Jinja for the launch of his campaigns.
The delegation was comprised of former Buganda Katikkiros, Joseph Mulwanyammuli Ssemwogerere, Dan Muliika, Mbogo clan head, Omutaka Kayiira Gajuule, former Buganda Youth Minister, Florence Nkalubo, among others.
They assured him that the Kabaka of Buganda and the wider Kingdom wished him success in his political journey.
The photos of the meeting which was conducted at Kyagulanyi’s home in Magere, Kyaddondo have sparked debate, with some in the NRM camp reportedly unsettled by the symbolic show of support from Buganda elders, a region they had claimed was firmly behind the ruling NRM party.
This latest development comes against a backdrop of strained relations between NUP and Buganda Kingdom officials. In the past, NUP supporters accused the Kingdom of being distant, particularly when Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga appeared neutral during political tensions. Some foot soldiers even lashed out, alleging that the Kingdom favored Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition, during his fallout with NUP leadership.
The fresh endorsement may now calm those tensions, showing a possible realignment between Buganda’s traditional leadership and the NUP camp as the 2026 elections draw closer.
