An outspoken Mukono Pentecostal church activist has called on Ugandans to desist from temptations of being derailed from traditional set ups by what he termed irregular politics characterized by division and hatred.
The head of Mt. Lebanon Christian Churches in Uganda, Bp. Samuel Lwandasa lamented that although over sh50bn worth of merchandise crosses the district daily, this has not helped reduce the level of unemployment and poverty among majority of residents in the district.
“Why should our children fail to get jobs with all the degrees they have? Foreigners have claimed our land where we buried our dead. Should we continue singing and clapping for politicians in the midst of our unemployed doctorate and master’s degree holders?” Lwandasa queried.
The President for Greater Mukono Pastors Destiny Forum was over the weekend addressing surviving members of over 100 families whose ancestors have lived in Mukono between the 1940s and 1989, at the introduction of the Greater House Mukono Foundation, at Mt. Lebanon Christian Centre Church in Mukono town.
The forum is geared at re-uniting members of traditional families whose glory has been eroded close to a period of over five decades, resulting in outright loss of their land, leading a life void of hope, unemployment, illiteracy, crime, poverty and working in isolation by individual families.
The forum, which takes off in Mukono Municipality’s central division, will with time roll out to Goma Division, and eventually to all the four project districts of Mukono, Buvuma, Buikwe and Kayunga. It is calculated to restore the traditional family oneness, communal execution of rites and functions by families as a brotherly unit, and encouraging locals to more positively engage in peaceful leadership contests.
Lwandasa lamented that today, groups from far away determine the form of leadership and to be embraced in Mukono, with locals having no stake in such decisions. “Taking advantage of the biting poverty among our people, these politicians bribe their way into leadership and end up sanctioning fraudulent land sales resulting in unrest, homelessness and other forms of suffering,” he lamented.
Kassanda Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Mike Ssegawa blamed poor representation at national fora, on haphazard election which brings into office opportunistic and self-centered leaders with no love for the area.
Ssegawa lamented that for decades there has been only the Colline Hotel in its standard, with newer local governments like Lugazi Municipality boasting of modern decent markets while Mukono is stuck with muddy undeveloped markets.
The police OC for Mukono taxi park police post Priscilla Ngonzi appealed to church leaders to avail her space during church services to enable her to sensitize parents on the best child upbringing tips.
The LC I Chairperson for Ggunga zone, Nankya Harriet Kasozi noted that unity is a big virtue for human kind, and hailed Bp. Lwandasa for his farsightedness to introduce the forum as a tool for fast tracking the move.
Several representatives from prominent houses variously thanked Bp. Lwandasa for bringing them together, and pledged to rally behind him in the struggle to revive their glory and accord their ancestors the respect and honour they deserve.
