Deadly Road Accident Slaughters 46 People on Kampala-Gulu Highway

He confirmed that 46 people died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries and were taken to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby facilities.

Traffic Police have confirmed 46 people dead following a fatal road accident which occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Kitaleba village near Asili Farm along the Kampala-Gulu highway.

The accident involved four vehicles; a Nile Star Coaches bus (UBF 614X), a Planet Company bus (UAM 045V), a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07), and a Tata lorry (UBK 647C).

According to traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the collision happened when the Nile Star bus heading to Gulu attempted to overtake a lorry, while the Planet bus from the opposite direction was also overtaking another vehicle.

Kananura said that both buses collided head-on during the manoeuvre leading to the deadly incident.

He added that one of the drivers tried to swerve to avoid impact, but the attempt led to a chain collision, causing the vehicles to overturn several times.

He confirmed that 46 people died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries and were taken to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby facilities. The bodies of the deceased were transported to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination and identification.

Kananura urged drivers to avoid reckless overtaking, which he noted remains a major cause of fatal accidents in Uganda. He extended condolences to the deceased’s families and wished the injured a quick recovery.
