Police in Kawempe are holding a school director following an incident of alleged negligence that resulted in the death of a four-year-old pupil.

According to Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, the child reportedly fell into a saucepan containing hot tea, sustaining severe burns to the lower part of his body.

The incident occurred on April 10 at Spotless Kindergarten and Day Care School in Kawanda-Kivulu, Nabweru Division, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso District.

“The deceased, a four-year-old boy, was studying in middle class. He was admitted to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on April 15,” Kawala said.

Police have since arrested the school director, Elizabeth Aluku, on allegations of rash and negligent acts leading to the death of a pupil.

Preliminary investigations indicate that at the time of the incident, no teacher was present in the classroom.

“Our findings show that all the teachers had moved to another room, leaving the children unattended to,” Kawala revealed.

She criticized the handling of the situation, noting concern over the presence of hot substances in a classroom occupied by young children without supervision.

Kawala urged school administrators and teachers to prioritize the safety of children under their care, warning that negligence in such environments can have fatal consequences.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
