Cooking gas in Sports Pro Hostel at Banda B9 in Nakawa Division on Monday exploded, injured five inmates and destroyed doors and windows. It is suspected that a resident who was cooking forgot to switch off the gas after cooking, leading to the accident.

According to one of the survivors, Bashir Salma, when an explosion went off, they thought it was an electricity mistake, but when they saw thick smoke and windows and doors plucked out with pane glasses scattered all over, they realized it was a cooking gas blunder.

Students squeezed out of the room and in the process, many were injured, while others jumped through the windows for safety outside. Rescuers rushed the injured to health units. Nakawa East MP, Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga arrived at the scene and consoled the students.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango disclosed that no student died in the incident but that five were seriously injured. The injured include Flavia Chelangat, Florence Akello and three other unidentified ones, and a security guard identified as Frank.
