Bukedea District on Wednesday registered twenty pregnant pupils who turned up to sit for their Primary Leaving Examinations that started on Wednesday, November 8.
The Bukedea district education officer, Stephen Okurut, made the revelation, adding that more two pupils who had recently given birth, also turned up for examinations.
Okurut said the district has also made preparations for a standby ambulance to take any expectant pupil who might enter labour during exams to the hospital.
The government allowed expectant girls to sit for their examinations, in a significant policy reversal.
Okurut hailed the pupils for their courage and their parents for supporting them and encouraging them to come to school.
“We are happy that the 22 turned up for the examinations,” Okurut said.
On Wednesday afternoon, the learners wrote the second paper, Social Studies and Religious Education, after completing Mathematics in the morning.
The learners will finish writing their final papers tomorrow, starting with Integrated Science in the morning and later, English.
Uganda National Examination Board executive director in October 2021, directed that all pregnant girls be allowed to register, noting that denying them the opportunity to sit for their final examinations would be double jeopardy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
