Government has signed a sh232bn contract with Egypt’s SAMCO National Construction Company Ltd for the construction of a passenger terminal at Kabalega International Airport in Hoima District.

The eight-month construction timeline is expected to play a critical role in Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

The Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, challenged the contractor to complete the project within the agreed timeframe while maintaining the required construction standards.

The minister also cautioned the company against corruption and urged it to ensure value for money in the execution of the project.

He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to fulfilling its contractual obligations to facilitate the timely implementation of the project.

Egyptian Ambassador to Uganda, Sherif Mohamed Abdellattif Elgammal, commended Uganda for what he described as a transparent and merit-based procurement process that resulted in the award of the contract to the Egyptian company.

He expressed confidence in SAMCO’s ability to deliver the project in accordance with the agreed standards and timelines.

The passenger terminal is expected to strengthen Kabalega International Airport’s capacity to handle growing passenger traffic as Uganda continues to expand its aviation infrastructure.

The project is also part of the country’s broader preparations for AFCON 2027, when Uganda will join Kenya and Tanzania in hosting the continental football tournament.

The contract further highlights the growing bilateral cooperation between Uganda and Egypt, particularly in infrastructure development and construction.
