The headtceacher of Ibanda High School located in Ibanda Town Council, Ibanda district is currently on the run after killing a seven-year-old boy in a hit and run accident.

Police have identified the suspect as Medard Ayebale and the deceased as Herbert Mugume. It is alleged that the suspect abandoned his vehicle at Kazo Police Station before fleeing.

According to Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson Michael Kananura, Ayebale was overspeeding when he knocked down Mugume, leading to his tragic death.

Kananura said that instead of reporting the incident, he abandoned the car and escaped, prompting a police manhunt.

Authorities have raised concerns over the rising number of hit-and-run cases. Last week alone, four children lost their lives in similar accidents.

“We are witnessing a rise in reckless driving and hit-and-run cases, which is putting lives at risk, especially children,” Kananura stated.

Under the Traffic and Road Safety Act, drivers involved in accidents must report to the police immediately.
