Mukono Municipality and the neighbouring villages are becoming a devil’s den each day that passes. A big number of people have fallen prey to the deadly assailants who are mostly traveling on motorcycles at night, hacking people without a known genuine reason. It is seriously believed to be an organized crime, of which Mukono people are loudly calling on the security operatives to intervene before the situation worsens.
Mukono Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Hajat Fatuma Ndisaba Nabitaka says that the intention of these panga-wielding assailants is yet to be known.
Ndisaba says these goons who travel at night on bodabodas are not normal thieves because in most cases, they just cut people and ride off.
Right from July to the whole of August, Mukono has not been safe at all. At least three people have been killed and scores nursing wounds, yet others are still admitted in different health facilities, having survived death just by a whisker.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango notes that the latest murder was registered on the early morning of Monday, September 2, 2024 at Kikubankima cell in Mukono Central Division.
Onyango identified the deceased as Edrine Moses Kaboggoza (35), a bodaboda rider and a resident of Kikubankima.

Police said that the motorcycle was dumped four meters from Kaboggoza’s body in a swamp near New Horizons Vocational Senior Secondary School in Mukono, one of the black spots.
Two other people murdered
Patrick Okware (35), a private security guard attached to Marvel Security Limited was on August 6, cut to death at the rented apartments belonging to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Samuel Stephen Kazimba Mugalu at Upper Kauga Cell in Mukono Central Division.
The Police publicist Onyango said that the assailants after cutting Okware on the head, they disappeared with his gun.
Onyango further noted that the deceased’s body had two deep wounds on the left hand side next to the ear which was also cut.
Police however suspected Okware’s fellow security guard only identified as Wilber with whom they were guarding the premises to be the prime suspect.
Wilber is said to have disappeared to unknown destination and by press time, he had not yet been arrested and the gun had also not been recovered.
David Ssemwogerere, the Upper Kauga Cell secretary for defense also reported the murder of one of the residents Ronald Nsubuga who was killed by stabbing and his body dumped by the roadside.
Ssemwogerere added that according to the investigating officers who visited Nsubuga’s crime scene, they concluded that he could have been killed from another place and his body ferried to the area.
Mukono Municipality Health Officer cut to coma by unknown assailants
Mukono Municipality Principal Health Officer, Dr. Anthony Kkonde was on August 15 cut on the head when he was walking to his residence at Upper Kauga in Mukono Municipality after packing his car at Jobiah Hotel.
Kyaggwe TV learnt that after cutting him, the assailants left behind Dr. Kkonde’s belongings including the phones, money and other personal property.
Dr. Kkonde is up to date admitted at Nakasero Hospital after going through a costly head surgery which allegedly cost over sh40m.
On the same day and village, assailants also cut a 25-year-old on the head and she was also admitted to Mulago Hospital in critical condition, following a referral from Mukono General Hospital where she was rushed immediately after picking her from the scene of crime.
Other survivors’ list
Badru Sikulu, a resident of Lower Kauga says that he was severely cut on the head on August 3,2024 leaving him in coma.
Esther Nakibirango, a resident of Ntaawo cell in Mukono Central division was also cut on August 3,2024 when she was coming from work at Seeta Market in Goma Division. Nakibirango says she was severely cut on the head and hands. Her belongings including a handbag that had sh500,000 was also robbed from her.
Zapi Iyaleni is said to have been cut from Total Village near YMCA. He also alleged that the assailants used a bodaboda as their means of transport.
RDC Ndisaba said that as security organs, they were beefing up the security to make sure that they have the assailants neutralized.
She advised locals to encourage moving in groups and avoid the black spots which are well known in their localities. Ndisaba has identified the black spots as follows; Upper Kauga cell, road going through Jobiah Hotel, Lower Kauga, Kitete cell and Mukono Industrial Area.
Police nets alleged panga-welding thugs
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson recently identified five suspected panga-welding thugs whom he said were behind the increasing insecurity in Mukono.
Owoyesigyire identified the suspects as Ronald Matuwa, a resident of Nsambya in Kampala, Michael Ssekiggo, Munguchi, Piriyo and Romans Wanane.
Owoyesigyire noted that their arrest followed an attack on an Indian national, Christopher Nazia, cutting him on the neck and a hand as the assailants demanded money from him.
Nazia is said to have been attacked while in his pharmacy in Mukono next to Colline Hotel on Wednesday August 14, at around 8:30pm when he was closing.
“The perpetrators were armed with pangas and stabbed the victim. Fortunately, Nazia was slightly injured around the neck as he loudly made an alarm causing the neighbours and police to respond,” he said.
It is alleged that one of the suspects was arrested and he led police to the rest of the colleagues they have been terrorizing the residents of Mukono with.
Owoyesigyire said that the suspects are charged with aggravated robbery and that they are currently detained at Mukono Police Station as they await to be presented before court after the investigations.
He added that Police detectives working in company with the Flying Squad were busy combing Mukono in the search for other suspects that are part of the panga-welding gang.
The insecurity persists leading to DPC’s transfer
Despite the alleged night police, flying squad and UPDF personnel deployment in some of the villages in Mukono, insecurity has persisted.
The alarming situation is said to have caused the transfer of the Mukono Division Police Commander, Edrisa Kyeyune and the officer in charge of Crime Intelligence, Ali Katende.
Onyango told Kyaggwe TV that Kyeyune was elevated to the position of deputy Regional Police Commander in charge of Savannah Region, replaced by Bernard Mugerwa and Joseph Sekitoleko, the new CI.
As a result of persistent criminality in Mukono, there are increased mob justice incidents. At Mukono General Hospital on a daily basis, they receive victims of mob justice who are severely beaten after being suspected of taking part in theft and robbery.
One of them died last week before he had been attended to by the medical officers at Mukono General Hospital.
