This gesture is said to have generated questions from the public and while addressing the media, the Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi responded to it.

Amongi said that the government gave Buganda Kingdom money instead of the two vehicles that President Museveni had planned to offer to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II as the same offer to other cultural institution heads.

She said the decision followed talks with Buganda Kingdom officials, including the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga.

“The kingdom asked for money, giving cultural reasons. I personally visited Katikkiro and we agreed that the government would provide money instead of cars,” she said.

“They explained that in Buganda culture, it is the subjects who provide for their king, including transport, the explanation which the government took in good faith,” she added.

Amongi said the government calculated the total amount and gave the kingdom a cheque. This included the value of the vehicles and earlier agreed allowances that had not been paid.

“We gave them the cheque, and they know how to manage and use the money in line with their customs,” she said.

She also played an audio clip during the press briefing to support her explanation.

Earlier, President Museveni had given vehicles to 15 other cultural leaders. Each received a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and a Toyota Hilux, with the full package worth about sh800m.

These were meant to support the leaders with transport for both the cultural head and the chief administrator.
