Muhoozi subsequently claimed that security personnel had recovered a cache of firearms and ammunition from one of Elwelu’s homes in Teso, giving him hours to surrender or risk being declared a rebel.

Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has warned people accused of sheltering retired Lt Gen Peter Elwelu that they will face serious consequences as security operations against the former deputy army chief intensify.
In his latest statement, Muhoozi said security personnel had recovered more guns and ammunition allegedly hidden by Elwelu in different locations, arrested his driver and seized the last vehicle he had been using.
“In our continuing operation to dismantle Private Elweru’s treachery and criminality, we have seized more guns and ammunition he had stashed away in different places,” Muhoozi said.
“We have also arrested his driver and seized the last vehicle he was using. Anyone who aids this fugitive in any way will face serious consequences.”
Muhoozi thanked supporters in the Teso sub-region for providing information to security agencies as the search for Elwelu continues.

The CDF did not disclose the number or type of weapons recovered in the latest operation, where they were found, or the identity of the arrested driver. The claims had not been independently verified by the time of publication.
Elwelu under pressure
The latest warning follows a series of public statements by Muhoozi against Elwelu, whom he has accused of treachery and described as a potential security threat.
On October 27, Muhoozi announced that he had stripped Elwelu of his military ranks and demoted him from lieutenant general to private. He also claimed that more than 20 former soldiers who had served under Elwelu had been arrested and were cooperating with investigators.
Muhoozi subsequently claimed that security personnel had recovered a cache of firearms and ammunition from one of Elwelu’s homes in Teso, giving him hours to surrender or risk being declared a rebel.
However, the military chief has not publicly provided a detailed inventory of the recovered weapons or disclosed evidence establishing that they were being stockpiled for an armed rebellion.
Former deputy army chief
Elwelu previously served as deputy Chief of Defence Forces and held other senior command positions in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). In March 2024, President Yoweri Museveni replaced him in the deputy CDF position, and he was subsequently associated with presidential advisory duties before his retirement from active service.

The confrontation between the two military figures has been public for some time. In December 2024, Muhoozi threatened to arrest Elwelu and criticised his suitability to serve in the army.
A relative of Elwelu told the media on October 28, 2026 that the retired general had gone into hiding because he feared for his life. The family also questioned the allegations against him. Elwelu had not publicly responded to the latest claims in the reports reviewed.
The latest developments raise further questions about Elwelu’s whereabouts, the circumstances surrounding the reported weapons recoveries and whether formal charges will be brought against him or others linked to the investigation.
The allegations remain claims by the military leadership, and any criminal responsibility would need to be established through the applicable legal process.
