A number of Mukono district National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearers from the 2021 general elections have resolved to throw their weight behind the district Vice Chairman Hajji Haruna Ssemakula in the race for the district party chairmanship. Hajji Ssemakula is standing against his boss, the party chairman for the last three terms Hajji Twahir Ssebaggala.

In a meeting at Mukono Bredo Hotel on Friday, the flag bearers signed a resolution where they pledged to support Haji Ssemakula, under the unanimous agreement that he is the more capable of the two to cement the existing disunity amongst the party members and forge for deeper oneness among grass root levels.

They blamed the existing leadership for weakness which resulted in election losses in subsequent years, right from presidential to lower levels, to the extent that today, none of the four legislators in the district subscribes to their party.

Their resolution stated in part that the existing chairman has put a brick on the party’s disunity in the district and that he should now take leave and give room for another leader for new ideas needed for strengthening the party.

“In the outgoing term, some of us were rendered orphans for lack of a good mobiliser to bring us together and we believe this is the time for us to change guard and bring in someone with capabilities that have been tested at the grass roots”, said Shadrack Kiraalire, a flag bearer from Ggulu ward.

And John Baptist Wamala Ssalongo, an LC V aspiring councillor for Nantabulirirwa, said that in the last term, they were destined to work with him but that because of unmentioned anomalies, he was denied entry into office; he added that this is now the opportunity for everyone to make their contribution through leadership they can trust.

Vivian Kalule from Nama sub-county expressed the view that a lot has been missed out because of internal wrangles and disunity in the party. “This state of affairs has only served to divide the party further and with the advent of Haji Ssemakula, new hope has been renewed and we should do all within our power to utilise the golden opportunity,” she said.

And an aspirant for the women’s league leadership Nazziwa Lyton said Hajji Ssemakula has added value to the party despite the limited access he has been enjoying, and expressed optimism that if placed in the highest office, he is destined to help the NRM reap much bigger values than has been the case in the past.

Hajji Ssemakula in an interview highlighted a number of things he has single handedly done for his party in the previous years including buying motorcycles to all the 18 NRM sub-county chairpersons for the district.
