Museveni Commissions $129m Hoima City Stadium, Uganda’s Pride Ahead of AFCON 2027

The government plans to construct at least ten sports facilities within 18 months to support AFCON hosting and long-term sports growth.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially opened the Hoima City Stadium, a state-of-the-art sports complex built in a record 12 months by Turkish firm Summa International Construction Company Inc.

The $129m facility is a major milestone in Uganda’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Located on a 34-acre piece of land, the stadium boasts a 20,000-seater outdoor arena and a 2,000-seater indoor sports hall, meeting international and FIFA-compliant standards.

Museveni praised Summa for their exceptional workmanship and efficiency, highlighting the project as a testament to Uganda’s capabilities.

The stadium’s completion is expected to boost sports development, talent growth, and regional economic development.

The First Lady Janet Museveni described it as a “marvellous Christmas gift” to the nation, crediting the President’s leadership for its success.

The stadium will also host football, rugby, and athletics events, and is expected to generate revenue and create jobs.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by government officials, sports enthusiasts, and dignitaries, including the Turkish Ambassador to Uganda. The stadium was inaugurated with a thrilling football match between Kitara FC and KCCA FC, with Kitara FC emerging victorious 1-0.
