A 66-year-old widow, Robina Nankumbi is nursing a double-sword-pain on her heart that followed the mysterious death of her son from the United Kingdom and the failure to have his body repatriated for decent burial.
Nankumbi, a resident of Kireka Cell in Kira Municipality, Wakiso district however accuses her daughter in-law, Maureen Naggujja of frustrating the family’s efforts to have the body of Garfield Nkurunziza, the deceased repatriated back home and have it accorded a decent burial.
It is alleged that Nkurunziza who went to UK, five years after the death of his father in 1999 in order to cater for his family, fell in love with Naggujja and the couple arranged a secret wedding without the attention of his family members.
“I was surprised that I just saw Nkuruziza after his coming back to Uganda without the attention of any of his family members. Again without our notice, during his three weeks in Uganda, we heard that he had got married to Naggujja,” the deceased’s mother, Nankumbi revealed.
She added that a few days after their marriage, Nkurunziza went back to the UK, only for the family back home in Uganda to learn about his mysterious death after Police recovered his body in his house, about three days after his death.
“It was at night when I got a mysterious call from a woman who told me that Nkurunziza had died. In the morning, we went to Nkurunziza’s home at Kiwanga Cell in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, only to find Naggujja who confirmed his death,” he said.
Some of the papers which this website got a chance to have a look at shows that Nkurunziza’s body was recovered in London on Sunday April 30, 2023.
From that date, the family is fighting tooth and nail to have his body repatriated but in vain.
“Through that turmoil, Naggujja told us that she is the only person who has permission over Nkurunziza’s body. She has therefore frustrated all the efforts to have his body brought back home,” Nankumbi said.
Nelson Nsubuga, one of Nkurunziza’s family members, said Naggujja told them that she already buried her husband and advised them to seek legal redress.
It is alleged that Nagujja, who is a businesswoman in Kampala applied for UK Visa though it was denied. Nkurunziza’s relatives allege that she wants to use this situation to leave the country because she is not even bothered about the return of the deceased’s body despite her saying that she is the one responsible for his body.
