The National Unity Platform’s (NUP) top leadership are working in a panicky mood following the notice from the Electoral Commission (EC) which leaves its 2026 presidential candidate’s nomination hanging in balance.

According to the party’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, Electoral Commission informed them that the signatures they submitted backing Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the official presidential aspirant for NUP are inadequate, yet it’s one of the prerequisites for the nomination of presidential candidates.

By law, according to the Presidential Elections Act Particularly Section 10 (1) b “the nomination is supported by not less than one hundred voters in each of at least two thirds of all the districts in Uganda.” Therefore, each presidential candidate is supposed to submit at least 100 signatures from 98 districts.

Rubongoya says the Electoral Commission has been playing hide and seek even when the party has been pushing them to confirm whether the party has met the threshold of the signatures needed only to be told today ahead of the set nominations dates of September 23-24, 2025, which is Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

“We have got information from the Electoral Commission, like we said yesterday we have been pushing them every day to give us an update on the signatures we submitted so that we can be able to pay nomination fees to be able to nominate our presidential candidate Honorable Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. Few minutes ago, today is Friday afternoon, we have got information saying NUP did not submit enough signatures…” said Rubongoya.
