According to accounts of the proceedings, he was arrested by security operatives hours after his release from the High Court and was held in detention for more than two weeks before resurfacing at Nateete Police Station.
National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for the Buganda region, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has been granted bail by the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court in a case in which he is accused of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society.
Kivumbi had been remanded to Kitalya Government Prison after he was re-arrested in July, shortly after securing bail from the International Crimes Division of the High Court in a separate terrorism case. The High Court had released him on July 9 after he had spent 169 days on remand.
The fresh charges relate to a speech Kivumbi allegedly made on July 9, 2026, at Bugoye Village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council in Butambala District, shortly after his release from the High Court.
Prosecution alleges that while addressing a public gathering, Kivumbi unlawfully incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against government officials and urged them to support a plan to wage war against the Government and seize power.
He is also accused of managing an unlawful society.
Kivumbi has denied the allegations.

He was subsequently transferred to Butambala, where he was charged and remanded to Kitalya Prison.
The prosecution has previously opposed his release, including challenging the suitability of his proposed sureties during the bail proceedings.
The fresh case is separate from the terrorism case in which Kivumbi was granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court. In that case, he has been released on a sh10m cash bail, with conditions including surrendering his passport and reporting to court monthly.
Kivumbi’s latest release means he will now continue facing the charges while out on bail. As with the terrorism case, the allegations against him remain before court and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
