Nansana Police Division have arrested five suspected panga-welding men who have been Terrorising the area for some time.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan said that on June 16, 2023, a targeted operation was conducted based on intelligence information, leading to the arrest of individuals involved in a panga-wielding gang responsible for a series of robberies.
Owoyesigyire said that during the operation, one suspect, Ssabagereka Julius, was apprehended after a stolen television set was found in his possession.
“Following his interrogation, he provided crucial information leading to the arrest of additional suspects. Among those were; Isingoma Lwegaba alias Wasswa, Ddumba Faizo alias General Faizo, Muwonge Joseph, and Mutebe John,” he said. He said that these individuals have been identified as key members of the criminal gang operating in Nansana Division and its neighboring areas.
“The investigations have revealed that this gang has been involved in various criminal activities, including the robbery of televisions, mobile phones and cash. Their modus operandi involves monitoring individuals in bars and subsequently ambushing them on their way home,” he revealed.
According to police, the recovered evidence includes two television sets, two pangas used in the robberies, and four suspected stolen mobile phones.
Owoyesigyire adds: “It has come to our attention that the gang is allegedly headed by Lukwago Abbu alias Abasi, who is still at large. We are actively pursuing leads to locate and apprehend Abasi, as well as any other associates and promoters associated with this criminal network.”
The police mouth piece assured: “In light of these recent developments, the Nansana Police Division is taking immediate action to address the issue comprehensively. We will conduct thorough interrogations of the arrested suspects to gather additional information on their criminal activities and potential collaborators. Furthermore, we will intensify investigations to recover any additional stolen items that may be in their possession.”
He noted that to ensure the safety and security of the community, Police have deployed additional resources, including increased foot patrols and motorized patrols within the division.
“We will also be collaborating with relevant stakeholders and community members to enhance our crime prevention efforts,” he emphasized.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
He however appreciated the assistance and cooperation of community members in combating crime and maintaining peace in Nansana Division.
He said that Police is committed to fostering a safe and secure environment for all residents in the Kampala Metropolitan Jurisdiction . “Together, we can create a community free from crime and fear,” he appealed.
