Authorities in Mukono district have announced a temporary suspension of swimming lessons in schools and public pools as a preliminary measure to curb the spread of Mpox.
The suspension has been declared by the Mukono deputy Resident District Commissioner, Hassan Kasibante.
According to Kasibante, the decision follows a rise in Mpox cases, with 158 infections reported in the district so far.
He explained that the move is aimed at safeguarding children and the wider community, given that Mpox spreads through close physical contact. He emphasized that swimming, a group activity, could contribute to further transmission.

“We need to act quickly to protect our children and the wider community. By halting swimming activities, we aim at minimizing the risk of Mpox from spreading further,” he stated adding;
“The suspension applies to both private and public schools, as well as hotels and leisure parks with swimming pools. These venues will not be permitted to host swimming lessons until further notice.”
Kasibante also warned that institutions and individuals who defy the directive could face legal consequences.
Formal notices will be sent to schools and pool owners to ensure compliance.

The decision is expected to have an economic impact, as private schools often rely on swimming lessons as an additional source of income, with students paying between sh10,000- 20,000 per session.
However, the local health officials, led by District Health Officer, Stephen Mulindwa, stresses that public health remains the top priority.
“We understand the economic implications, but the health and safety of our people come first. We urge everyone to comply with the directive to help prevent further cases of Mpox,” Kasibante said.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates on when the suspension may be lifted.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, adhere to public health guidelines, and report any suspected cases to authorities.
