The mother, Margret Nabirye popularly known as Maama NUP in Iganga said that she has already written to Kyagulanyi over the matter but that no reply is forthcoming.

Relatives of a dead supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Iganga who perished in a motor accident in 2022 as he travelled to Omoro County along with other colleagues for a campaign round to replace former parliament speaker Jacob Oulanyah have made a desperate appeal to NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu to rescue them from a vehicle compensation puzzle.

The late Dennis Waiswa died in an accident involving a Toyota Wish car belonging to one Isaac Nduulu who has since filed a civil suit seeking compensation of his vehicle said to have been hired by the deceased. Waiswa and former Kazo-Angola councilor Yakub Kiggundu died in the accident on 21st May 2022 as they proceeded to Omoro.

In the case which is before Iganga Chief Magistrate Epodoi Kiboko, Nduulu sued Collins Tenywa for a sh100m compensation and costs for the vehicle as he (Nduulu) insists that it is the defendant who hired his car and not the deceased.

Vehicle which caused the accident.

Nduulu’s lawyer Brian Kateete told court that there is a recorded video speech of the defendant in his brother’s burial speech, to be produced in court at the appropriate time. According to the lawyer, Tenywa claimed responsibility for having hired the vehicle as he pleaded with NUP leaders and other sympathizers to help the family in compensation.

He added that there was also some mobilization of the money over the matter where Tenywa was the treasurer but never paid anything to the owner.

Tenywa denied hiring the vehicle and attributed his burial speech to Momammad Bagabo, a relative of the plaintiff and a family friend, who he claimed asked him to speak on his (Bagabo’s) behalf.

Tenywa said that Bagabo who is now plaintiff’s witness number one, approached him during the burial meeting and asked him to speak, and now says he did not know it was a ploy to incriminate him in preparation of the immediate case.

The deceased, Waiswa (right) and Kiggundu who died in the accident aboard the vehicle in question.

He further told court that his identity card copies produced as exhibits to the case file as proof of transaction were forged. Tenywa’s lawyer George Kalireku asked the court to dismiss the evidence.

The accused Tenywa who is vying for Iganga municipality parliamentary seat is appealing to party president Kyagulanyi and other top party leaders and supporters to help them either pay the lawyer’s fees since their relative died in line of supporting party activities.

The mother, Margret Nabirye popularly known as Maama NUP in Iganga said that she has already written to Kyagulanyi over the matter but that no reply is forthcoming.

The magistrate adjourned the matter to May 19, 2025 for further mention of the case.
