Rwanda’s Parliament has fired back at Brussels after the European Parliament passed a resolution calling for the release of opposition figure Victoire Ingabire and urging a review of EU aid to Kigali.

In a rare show of unity, both chambers of Rwanda’s legislature denounced the resolution as neocolonial interference and an attack on national sovereignty.

The clash revives long-running tensions over human rights, political space and Rwanda’s relationship with its international partners.

As EU lawmakers warn of aid suspensions, Rwandan MPs have vowed to defend the country’s judicial independence.  The standoff therefore sets the stage for a new round of diplomatic sparring— with potential consequences for Rwanda’s global standing and domestic politics. #DWAfrica
