A 16-year-old girl Senior Three Student is lying in shock at a health facility in Butalejja district following her giving birth to quadruplets (four babies).
Nankya Mwanjuma, a student at Busolwe Seed Secondary School has given birth to premature babies from Busolwe Hospital in Butalejja district.
Following the condition of the babies and the mother, the medics at Busolwe hospital have referred Nankya to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment and management.
Speaking to our reporter, Nankya has revealed that following the antenatal care services she received as recommended, the doctor at the health facility told her that she was expecting twins.
However, to her disappointment, Nankya says she ended up giving birth to four babies. About the father of the babies, Nankya says he is a fellow student who has no ability to take care of her and the babies.
She has however appealed to the community for support so that the babies can receive the needed health care and treatment.
Dr. Julian Abeso, a pediatrician at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital has reported that all the four babies are doing well, with weights ranging from 0.9kg to 1.2kgs.
“Although they are not on oxygen, the babies require adequate warmth,” she has said.
Dr. Abeso has emphasized that Nankya needs to wait for a long time before having another child to ensure her comfort and full recovery.
The babies are experiencing hunger and doctors are attempting to provide them with vitamins since Nankya is unable to produce enough required breast milk.
This incident highlights the high rate of teenage pregnancies in Butaleja district, where the world’s youngest grandfather is also found.
