Six residents of Kitebi cell in Mutundwe ward, Rubaga Municipality, perished in a road accident when the Toyota ‘Drone’ taxi they were travelling in overturned and somersaulted several times, as they travelled back home from burial of a neighbour’s relative in Isingiro.

The six died on Saturday in Rakai district on their way back home after burial of the mother of a village mate Thobias Nsubuga. They were trying to take a shortcut when the driver Peter Onyango lost control and the taxi overturned. The six died instantly while others escaped with serious injuries including fractured limbs.

The dead include the head of laity for Amans and Mapeera church Kitebi, Veronica Nakabiri, her assistant Teddy Ishunga, Peter Onyango the driver, Hadijah Naiga Musiiri, Dan Kibirige and a one-year old baby whose parents are hospitalised.

Florence, the wife to the driver Onyango said the burial team rang her husband at 3:00 am alerting him that it was time to start the journey to Isingiro, and that although he was at first reluctant, he accepted and drove off. “The next news I got was that my husband was dead,” she said.

Kitebi LC I Chairman Henry Kasule said the village was struck by an untold tragedy, as almost everybody is in a way touched by the loss of the six.
